StopTrik International Film Festival is dedicated to stop motion techniques of hand-made, spatial animation as puppet film, claymation, object or photography manipulation, animation of loose materials (such as salt, sand etc), pixilation, traditional cut-out and many more. The list of sub-genres could be complemented with such exceptional techniques as animation of lights, fire, yarns, threads. Artists' imagination is limitless and so we can be neither orthodox nor strict while defining the term "stop motion". The ultimate goal of this unique annual gathering is to admire and celebrate artistry of hand-made, spatial animation together with all the other drifters of the surreal, absurd or merry highways who are ready to pursue frame by frame illusion.

WORKSHOT 2017: Intensive Workshops of Festival Journalism

with Nancy Denney-Phelps

Maribor, October 7th−8th 2017 @ 7th StopTrik IFF, Maribor

Nancy Denney-Phelps's statement:

This is a hands-on workshop where we will publish a print edition of our 4 page newspaper on Sunday (Oct. 8th) for distribution at the closing ceremony. We will also publish an on-line version.

After discussion about what makes a good article and a short written exercise we will decide who wants to cover which aspects of the festival, ie: short films, special events, interviews with animators and guests, etc. The workshop is also open to those interested in photo journalism who wish to work in conjunction with a journalist covering an event. This IS NOT a photography workshop.

Prerequisite: Read one of my articles on my AWN blog at: You may read anyone that you want but come prepared to talk about it at our first meeting. Bring a laptop or paper and pen. Also a note pad and pen for taking notes when on assignment. This will be a work intensive project but I believe in the end we will all get a lot out of it.

Nancy Denney-Phelps is a journalist writing about European animation and festivals as well as a producer of music for animation. Along with her composer/musician husband Nik Phelps, she co-founded the Sprocket Ensemble dedicated to presenting live performances of original music with screenings of contemporary animation from around the world. Nancy’s writings have appeared in such publications as CARTOON and ANIMATOON as well as on her regular blog for AWN (Animation World Network). She is also a regular correspondent for ASIFA/San Francisco and a member of the ASIFA International Board of Directors. Nancy has served on numerous International Animation Festival juries and taught time management for animators at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, School of Art and Design. Her strong interest in the history of animation has led her to present programs on the history of animation traced through music at many animation festivals and conferences worldwide. She also works as advisor to several animation festivals.

A film festival is a living creature and the festival journalists are the miarcle-workers who guide forgetful or confused viewers through the complex net of film programmes, special events and parties. The journalists review and criticize the choices of the programmers and the jurors. They challenge the filmmakers with the most surprising questions only to reveal the artists' views on cinema, mysteries, difficulties and beauty of art and life. And when the festival fervor calms down it is a festival newspaper, a festival blog, that stays and serves as a record of special moment for all the attendees and contributors, cinema historians, enthusiasts of the city and its cultural scene.

This year StopTrik IFF invites you to record, create and preserve the very special moment of the 7th edition of unique stop motion animation festival held in Maribor. You're welcome to join an intensive training of festival journalism mentored by the one and only Nancy Denney-Phelps, a worldwide known animated film critic. The American journalist based in Belgium will discuss and supervise the aspiring reporters' writings and publishing process (paper issue and blog).

The workshops will be held in English and participation is free of charge.
