StopTrik International Film Festival is dedicated to stop motion techniques of hand-made, spatial animation as puppet film, claymation, object or photography manipulation, animation of loose materials (such as salt, sand etc), pixilation, traditional cut-out and many more. The list of sub-genres could be complemented with such exceptional techniques as animation of lights, fire, yarns, threads. Artists' imagination is limitless and so we can be neither orthodox nor strict while defining the term "stop motion". The ultimate goal of this unique annual gathering is to admire and celebrate artistry of hand-made, spatial animation together with all the other drifters of the surreal, absurd or merry highways who are ready to pursue frame by frame illusion.

7. StopTrik International Film Festival

It is the seventh time we meet to celebrate the intellectual and aesthetic richness of stop motion animation. The journey starts in Central Europe, but the road leads to Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia and other countries of Latin America. A festival viewer is a peculiar kind of a tourist who explores surreal universes, ruled by their inner logic, physics and metaphysics. And yet, every concious receiver of animation art is perfectly aware that animated worlds, seemingly detached from reality, in some subtle and indirect way mirror, comment and interpret their cultural contexts.

From European perspective, Latin American cultures seem distant, in many ways exotic and unaccessible. General education provides only very basic historical and geographical knowledge about this region. For this reason, a common imagination of Central-East Europeans produces a lot of colourful, yet plain stereotypes about these particular Others − instead of diversity we only perceive blurry landscapes, blended with pop-culture iconography. 7th StopTrik IFF special programmes and additional events instigate the process of recognizing the Other. Through the films and talks, we will map the problems of cultural memory, significance of myths and rituals, representation of traumatic experiences and artistic articulation of subjects such as religious beliefs, colonialism and strategies of resistance, eventually women emancipation. The programmes Latin American Stop Motion are curated as a dialogue: Inner Perspective is a selection, proposed by the Moebius Collective (Cecilia Traslaviña, Juan Camilo González, Lina X. Aguirre, Laura Victoria Delgado), while Outer Perspective was created by the undersigned, with the precious help of dear friends of StopTrik: Pedro Giongo, Diego Akel, Elaine Gordeeff and Sávio Leite, and last but not least, Jair Salvador Flores Alvarez (Mr. Kropka), who also curated an adult-only selection Mexican Midnight Movies. Cecilia Traslaviña, Mr. Kropka and Eliane Gordeeff will introduce animation scenes of Colombia, Brazil and Mexico, while Laura Victoria Delgado, an experimental filmmaker and a philosopher, will run practical workshops of stop motion animation Workshot 2017: Back Wall Echo. Furthermore, on the occasion of 100th anniversary of Argentinian animation, we will rediscover Quirino Cristiani's pioneering work in the field of political cut-out.

As each year, StopTrik IFF has an honour to present the most intriguing contemporary stop motion productions from all around the world and invite StopTrik Audiences, Maribor Students and Lodz Students to choose the winners. International Stop Motion Competition comprises of 26 films from 16 countries, whereas The Borderlands Competition, featuring films that experiment with stop motion and other means of cinematic expression, presents 13 titles from 9 countries. Both programmes will be screened in Maribor and repeated in Lodz thanks to collaboration with O!PLA Festival and Kino Bodo.

StopTrik IFF was created in order to provide art enthusiasts, professionals and authors with the space for direct interactions and exchange of ideas. And so we complement the film programme with lectures, discussions and book presentations. For the purpose of acknowledging the efforts of the cultural organizers from various parts of the world, we emphasize the work and mission of partner festivals: Animasivo (Mexico), Stop Motion Barcelona (Spain) and TAFF Turku Animated Film Festival (Finland). Willing to demonstrate the support for distribution of independent shorts and video art, we invite you to find out the details of the projects: Film Podlasie in Attack! Reloaded (Poland) and PAF Aport (Czech Republic). With a great pleasure and satisfaction, we observe dynamic progress in Slovenian animation. This year both Competition and Panorama programmes present the newest achievements of the local scene. The youngest generation of animation lovers can meet an adorable Koyaa, the protagonist of popular series by Kolja Saksida, while the older ones may attend the presentation of the University of Nova Gorica and get familiar with their unique teaching methods and outstanding results. The film programme and the additional events will be covered by the group of aspiring film critics and journalists, led and mentored by an acclaimed animation writer, Nancy Denney-Phelps.

Let the fiesta begin!
